Are you a crafty type of person? Can you make cute seasonal decorations or party favors at the drop of a hat? Then you will love this recipe. Are you not crafty at all? You will also love this recipe. These Apple Donuts are just fun and easy to make and we are appalled that we didn't think of them ourselves. Add to it that they satisfy our basic craving for apple desserts this time of year, and you've basicially got the perfect recipe for fall. We've added our usual tips and tricks to make sure that your pastries are a success, both on the video below and the printed version, as well as our magic time-saving trick to thaw the pastry quickly, in case you're impatient to get these in the oven like we were! One of the tips includes what kind of apple to use (spoiler alert- don't be misled by the green apple in the painting...).

Apple Donuts

6 donuts
38 minutes assembly & bake time

Ingredients

1 egg, beaten

1 tsp. water

2 McIntosh or Rome Beauty apples,

unpeeled

1 pkg. (17 oz.) frozen puff pastry,

thawed (2 sheets)

3 tablespoons cinnamon-sugar

Instructions

Heat oven to 375°F. Beat egg and water in bowl. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cut each apple crosswise into 1/4" slices (leave core for now). Choose the 6 slices that are most uniform in size (snack on the rest!). Cut out the cores with a small round cutter.

Unfold 1 thawed pastry sheet. Cut pastry along fold marks into 3 rectangles. Cut each lengthwise into 3 (1" wide) strips. Repeat with remaining pastry sheet. You'll have 18 strips.

Wrap the pastry around the apple slices (about 3 per slice). Don't cover the hole in the middle! Make sure that the ends of the strips are under the apple, so they don't unravel during baking.

Place on baking sheet and brush tops with egg mixture. Sprinkle each with 1/2 tbsp. cinnamon-sugar.

Bake 18 min. or until golden brown. Let cool 10 min. on wire rack.

How do I thaw the pastry?

We are SO glad you asked! If you thaw according to the package directions, it will take about 40 min. at room temperature. OR, you could use our trick and microwave it:

Wrap 1 sheet pastry in paper towel and microwave on HIGH 15 seconds, then turn over and microwave for another 15 seconds. If it doesn’t unfold easily, microwave for another 5 seconds on each side. You want it to still be cold but unfold easily so it doesn't break. Only thaw 1 sheet at a time this way.

Can I use other types of apple?

We like McIntosh and Rome in this recipe for both flavor and texture. You'll want a sweeter apple (since there isn't a lot of sugar in the recipe), and Granny Smiths are too tart. Granny Smiths are also a little more firm, so they won't be as soft after baking.
